[Fpga-synth] Dumb ISE Question

I've been wondering what the "Number of" drop down list (just above the
sources pane) is for.  At ISE startup it defaults to LUTs, but can be set
to flops, BRAM, IO, and DSP.  I looked in the help menu and while it
mentions the existence of the dropdown, it doesn't offer any information
about what it does.

Can anyone explain what it does?
